Organization Tips for a Functional and Tidy closet

Updated: Jul 19, 2024

Whether you have a massive walk-in closet or a tiny apartment with limited storage, keeping this space clutter-free can be difficult. While it may seem impossible, there are organizational systems and tricks to keep your closet from becoming a cluttered mess.

Here are 8 tips to calm the chaos in your closet:

Pack away seasonal clothing

One of the simplest ways to declutter your closet is to remove items you don't wear year round. Bulky clothing such as sweaters and coats can be stored in storage bags or containers. Be sure to label your storage solutions

Group everything together by category

Divide your items together by type. While this tip is simple, it makes a world of a difference! You’ll be able to find what you're looking for much quicker and easier when your items have a designated spot. This is essential to maintaining a well-organized space.

Color coordination

If you really want to elevate your closet, arrange your clothing in each of their categories by color. Organizing your clothing by color is a simple and functional system that also adds a nice touch to your closet.

Use drawer inserts

We all know dresser drawers can get a little chaotic. If you often find your drawers overflowing and disorganized, it may be time to use some drawer organizers. With this system in place, your drawers can stay neat.

If you don't want to purchase inserts, filing and rolling clothes are a great alternative. You’ll be shocked at just how much extra space and function this creates for you. A helpful idea is to assign one type of garment only for each drawer.

Here are some of my favorite drawer organizers:

Utilize the back of your door

Take advantage of your closet door- it's essentially a blank canvas for additional storage. Use an over-the-door hanger to free up space by storing shoes, purses, or even jewelry.

Here are some of my favorite door organizers:

Utilize clothing racks

If you’re struggling with a lack of space, a clothing rack may be a good solution to hang additional items. They’re portable, functional, and cute!

Add baskets

Baskets are my go-to for closet organization. Not only do they make your closet look more appealing, they provide function for clothing and accessory storage. Baskets can be used to place on top shelves to store items you don't frequently use, such as travel accessories, swimsuits, and extra bedding. Depending on the size of your shelves, you can stack containers to maximize space.

Use clear dividers

Consider adding dividers to your shelves to keep your belongings organized. This is a great way to keep items separated while still allowing you to see what you have.

If your closet could use a little help, I hope you found a few ideas in this post to help you make your space more functional and organized.
