A 7-step guide for decluttering and tackling any organization project

Whether you're organizing your kitchen pantry, a cleaning supply closet, or an office, these golden rules can be applied to any organizing project.

Step 1- Empty the space

It's amazing how much stuff seems to accumulate and how quickly it can begin to take over every surface in your home. Decluttering is an essential part of the organizing process.

The very first step in any organizing project is to empty out your space. Yes...everything. Removing all of your items is the only way to fully access what you have, and determine what to keep or toss. This will give you a fresh start and allow you to evaluate the placement of items, as well as determine how to optimize re-organizing everything moving forward.

Step 2- Ready...set...SORT

Once everything is out, it's time to place like items together. Give each item a category, and sort all of your belongings into piles based on these categories. This will allow you to determine how much space needs to be devoted to each category and evaluate storage solutions.

Step 3- Purge

While this might feel overwhelming, It's time to revisit each pile and asses each item individually. Before you begin, grab boxes and label them with relocate, toss, and donate/sell.

Remember, items that are not used are taking up valuable space in your home. If you don’t love it, don’t keep it. This is a super basic principle that is the basis for all purging, but if you do not love something then let it go. If you find yourself struggling to make decisions about what to keep and what to discard, ask yourself these questions:

  • When was the last time I used it?

  • Does it have sentimental value?

  • Do I currently use this?

Step 4- Create systems and solutions

Create functional storage solutions by investing in new organizers that maximize space and efficiency. This is a fundamental part of maintaining organization.

Use bins/containers to give each item a designated home. Each container needs to have a purpose and function. There is not one right way to store items- contain items in a way that makes sense to you.

Use your space to its full potential to get the maximum amount of storage and function. Determine organizing solutions such as storage hooks, stacking bins, and small storage caddies inside cabinet doors.

Step 5- Labeling

While this step is completely optional, it's highly recommended: use labels to embellish your newly organized items. Labeling is helpful for maintaining organization, as it allows you to identify contents and locate items when needed quickly.

Step 6- Put everything away

Now for the fun part. As you begin to refill your space, keep priority in mind. Arrange frequently used items within easy reach, and less frequently used items in less accessible areas.

Taking the initiative to organize a chaotic space in your home can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. Using these simple steps, you can break down the organizing process into a project that's manageable and tackle even the most disorganized of spaces. You got this.
